  • Burns: Holding a baby while cooking, keeping the thermostat set too high and leaving chemicals in the reach of children can all cause burn injuries. According to the Safe Kids Worldwide (SKW), thousands of children are burned each year and around eight deaths per year result in such injuries.
  • Buckle Up! Every year children are hurt by well-meaning parents forgetting to buckle their children into highchairs, car seats, strollers and grocery carts. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, during 2005 there were 24,000 children treated for shopping cart injuries.
  • Breathing Obstructions: According to SKW, airway obstructions are the leading cause of death among infants under age 1. Primary causes include choking on small round foods like hot dogs, grapes, nuts, popcorn and carrots. Other sources include aspiration from balloons or other small toys.
  • Monitor: The best way to avoid injury to a young child is to provide constant supervision and redirection when engaging in something they shouldn't do.

"Nothing is more important than knowing where your child is and what is happening around them at all times," says Dr. John Mayer, a Chicago-based psychologist and author of several books, including a book for the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) titled Creating a Safe and Welcoming School (UNESCO, 2007). "If you don't have this sense of priority in parenting, you increase the chances tht harm can come to your child."
