When the Buzz of the Engine Doesn't Lull Your Baby to Sleep

"You don't need to be watching them breathe every second unless they have a significant problem," Walker says. "If you have a child who has physical complications, you need an adult in the back seat who can observe."

While a second person may be needed to perform child care, that other person should not be a child, Walker says. "You can't do child care and drive at the same time," she says. "If your child needs to be fed, stop the car and feed your baby. Multitasking is what you do at home, not while you are driving. Don't drive with one eye on the road and one eye on the baby." Walkers says siblings should not be charged with the responsibility of taking care of their infant child in a car.

If you are the designated driver, you have to find a place to pull over to become the caregiver for your infant.

Hazards in the Car
Walker says parents should not give their babies or toddlers food while driving as they may choke on grapes, hot dogs or other food items. And she says many cars are filled with "lots and lots of junk," which is a potentially dangerous environment.

Although it's tempting to hang mirrors or use suction cups to hang a mobile, Walker says this can be a disastrous mistake in a car crash when objects fly at 30 mph. Objects in an accident fly around as if they are clothes in a dryer. "If it's a soft teddy bear, that's fine," she says. "If it's a hard music box, think about that flying off and hitting the person next to them in the crash. Look at the whole car and get rid of things that are loose and dangerous."
