Buying Your Child's First Tricycle

Learning to Ride
It will take some time for your toddler to master the tricycle, but with support and encouragement every kid can do it. When your child is first learning to ride, encourage him or her to push directly down on the pedals.

"Parents can actually put their hands on each of the child's knees and push so they understand," says Grinde. "And it may help to start on a slight hill so they build some momentum."

Be aware that the ability to pedal will most likely come before the ability to steer because steering requires the child to coordinate what they see with their body movements. But mastering this skill is an important developmental milestone that your child is sure to enjoy. "Riding a tricycle is the mastery of a new item in their environment, which is very exciting," says Grinde.

Learning to ride a tricycle is an exciting part of growing up that will open your toddler to a whole world of new adventures. When you know your child is ready, choose the right tricycle and remember safety – all that's left is to just have fun!
