Buying Your Child's First Tricycle

    Not sure your toddler is ready for a tricycle? Consider starting with a rocking toy of some kind, like the rocking horses from when you were a kid. Now rocking toys come in all shapes, colors and themes. These toys will help build your child's coordination and balance and get her ready to ride.

    Shopping for the Tricycle
    When you think of a tricycle, you probably picture the iconic red three-wheeler from your own childhood. These days, tricycles come with a huge variety of features. However, not all tricycles are appropriate for a toddler who's just learning to ride. So when you're shopping for a trike, you need to consider what is right for your child.

    Melissa Marks, a mom who lives on the Upper West Side of New York City, and her husband conducted an exhaustive search for their daughter's first tricycle. "Living in New York City, we researched certain features such as rubber versus plastic wheels and durability," says Marks. "We also researched other factors like safety, lasting power and smoothness of ride." Marks wanted a tricycle that included a handle so she could push her daughter as she was learning to ride.
