Healthy Mini Meals
Jill Buonomo of Sunnyvale, Calif., and Darci Clift of Edmond, Okla., already have figured out the secret to a lifetime of healthy eating: Start them young. Buonomo,a mother of two kids ages 2 and 4, says she likes to stay away from processed foods as much as possible and nurture her children's appreciation for fresh, healthy foods. She has a bunch of super fast, healthy recipes including these three:
  • Brown rice cakes topped with natural peanut butter and low-sugar jelly
  • Mashed avocado mixed with salsa and served with tortilla chips
  • Smoothies: yogurt, banana, milk and frozen fruit (blueberries, strawberries, mango, etc.) pureed in a blender until smooth

Clift, who has a 1-year-old and a 3-year-old, says she believes healthy eating habits start early, and it's important to teach your children to choose healthy snacks. However, she also believes you shouldn't make junk food the Holy Grail.

"I'm not saying that I don't let them enjoy junk food at all, just in moderation," says Clift. "I do try to make healthy options easily available. The cookies and candy are kept up high where I have to distribute them."
