Dinner On the Go
Feeding Babies and Toddlers When You're Out and About
By Renee Roberson
"Prevention of the hunger or thirst (which can mask as hunger) is the first step," Koff says. "Take time at whatever location they are at prior to getting into the car to give them a little snack to tide them over until they
are home. Also, dehydration may be the trigger for seeming hunger. Try to preempt this by giving them water, coconut water or some water-based fruits and vegetables throughout the day, and also not giving them a high-salt food choice such as fast food, some soups and savory snack foods right before a car trip."
If all else fails and you truly believe your baby or toddler is really hungry, Koff prefers that a parent pull over and feed the child in a parking lot in between errands rather than allow the child to eat or drink while you are driving.
If you want your child to eat healthfully while also trying to accommodate a hectic schedule, a little extra planning and food shopping can make it possible. Plan your social and work calendar out a month ahead of time and refer to it when planning your meals and doing the weekly grocery shopping. Make sure you have a lot of fresh fruit and vegetables handy at all times, as well as yogurt, dry cereals, cheese and whole-grain crackers.
With a little luck, you can instill the importance of eating family meals together in your children from a young age and help them learn to love nutritious snacks and make better choices when eating out.
