How to Make Everybody Happy

By Kelly Burgess

The contents of Lehmann's depends upon the venue. It can contain books, small toys, coloring books and crayons, and small, inexpensive, electronic toys. Even though her toddlers are too young to actually play these, they love "feeling big" and playing with them. And if they break, it's no big deal.

  • Brink a blanket. Francis has found that a towel or thin blanket laid on the bleachers can prevent some toy rolling if you have a die-hard car fanatic.
  • Download a game to your phone. This is Lehmann's last ditch strategy.
  • Break out the DVD player. Stanton has been known to tote along a portable DVD player with headphones.
  • Bring snacks. Don't forget something to eat and drink, of course, including juice boxes and sippy cups.
  • But don't rely on snacks for little tummies. Lehmann suggests making sure a toddler is well-fed before an event. If your toddler is truly hungry, snacks won't be enough and she'll get cranky. The snacks should be packed for their distraction value, not necessarily to replace a meal.
  • Use a backpack, stroller or child harness and leash. These work to restrain darting toddlers so they don't rush out onto a busy sports venue. Better safe than sorry, notes Stanton.
  • Check out the potty – even if they don't have to go. Lehmann says just the break and the chance to stretch their legs can help her younger children sit a little longer.
