Kids, Indoor Sports and Toddlers
How to Make Everybody Happy
By Kelly Burgess
One caveat before we get to the tips: All three of our moms are leery about too much electronic distraction, whether it be TV, DVDs, videogames or whatever the latest obsession is. However, these are the situations where they make their exceptions. The fact that they don't allow a lot of these things at home makes them even more effective when they need them. So, without further ado, here are their tried and true tips:
- Find a helper. If Dad's not available, Stanton suggests paying a teen or preteen who is also attending the event to help out. In her experience, these kids would often rather make a few bucks than cheer on their own sibling.
- Bring handheld electronic games appropriate for the age and keep them only for this purpose. Francis recommends Leapster or Leapster 2, which are easy for even very young children to use, are educational and have no questionable content. She also notes that they don't seem to have the addictive quality her older boys' game systems do, so are easy to take away after the event is over.
- Pack a goodie bag.
