How to Make Everybody Happy

By Kelly Burgess

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Having your kids in organized activities is almost a requirement for life these days. It's how they make friends, learn skills and show off those skills. The challenge is when you have a toddler who's restless or bored while you're trying to watch his or her older sibling dance, sing, kick a soccer ball around or learn the backstroke.

Since moms love to get good tips from other moms, who better to talk us off this ledge than three moms who, between them, have 15 children and one on the way? Our experts are (drum roll, please):

Meagan Francis: She lives in St. Joseph, Mich., and has four boys ranging in age from 3 to 11, and a girl on the way. She's also the author of Table for Eight: Raising a Large Family in a Small-Family World (Alpha, 2007).

Michelle Lehmann: The founder of www.LotsofKids.com who lives in the Chicago area with her eight children ranging in age from 2 to 13.

Melissa Stanton: The author of The Stay-at-Home Survival Guide: Field-Tested Strategies for Staying Smart, Sane and Connected While Caring for Your Kids (Seal Press, 2008) and the founder of www.LifeSupportForMoms.com. She's also mom to a 10-year-old son and twin 6-year-old daughters. They live in the Washington, D.C., area.

Noisy or Not, Here They Come
The big divider, indoor activity-wise, seems to be the noise level. An event that involves sports, such as basketball, skating, gymnastics, swimming lessons, karate and the like, allows for a greater range of opportunities to supply entertainment for the spectator kids because you don't have to worry about keeping them quiet. When the activity is something like a concert or any type of recital, it can be a little tougher, but it's not impossible.
