From Only to Oldest-Helping Your Older Child Adjust to a New SiblingSpecial Time
Remember: One-on-one time is very important. I was nursing and found it difficult to get away from the baby for long periods in order to give Jonah special time alone with me. So I instituted a pajama party ritual each weekend during which Jonah and I ate popcorn, talked and watched TV in my bed. He really looked forward to our special time without Brandon, and slowly he became more comfortable with our new family makeup. I am happy to say that a year later, Jonah and Brandon are the best of buddies, and it is Brandon whom Jonah immediately seeks out when he gets home from school each day.

What Else Can You Do?
  • Remember how you felt when you had to share your parents with a sibling.
  • Review baby pictures with the older child to point out the fact that he or she was loved and cared for the same way as the new baby.
  • Monitor gift giving and either ask that people bring something for the older child or keep a stash of your own to avoid jealousy. Or give big brother or sister a special gift when the baby is born.
