Tips for Parents

  • Encourage your child to choose pursuits that generate increased physical activity. Buy active toys instead of computer games or videos. Define indoor areas for physical play with soft balls or scooter toys.
  • Simple adjustments to everyday routines can make a big difference. For instance, suggest kids walk or ride their bikes to school.
  • Both adults and children should be physically active at least one hour every day. Plan family activities such as bike riding, hiking, field trips and house or yard projects. Take walks together and set a goal of 10,000 steps a day.
  • Youngsters who participate in organized sports or physical activities can reap additional benefits of improved social skills and self-esteem. Enroll your child in classes they enjoy, such as dance, martial arts, swimming or tennis.
  • Praise your child's increased activity level. Always help to replace negative thinking with positive thinking.
