Fostering Your Toddler's Creative Side

Ulichny says she plans to limit the amount of time her daughter watches television. "I think being in that creative environment will foster her imagination," she says. "By not having the television and computer games toddlers become very creative. I think it's also important to have that interaction with parents. Every child has a passion. Once you discover that, it can foster their imagination."

Playing Pretend
Suzanne Lykins of Wesley Chapel, Fla., says she has found her 3-year-old toddler does not require elaborate toys or games to stay entertained.

Lykins and her husband, Brett, do not need to set limits on television because their daughter does not show an interest in watching television programs. "She loves arts and crafts," Lykins says. "She can sit down and paint for an hour, which for a toddler is like an eternity."

Lykins says her energetic toddler likes to spend time around other people, talking and showing off. "She likes to sing and dance," Lykins says. "She will put on a show for us. She likes to pretend. My husband plays a game with blocks and they use coins. The coins are animals. That's imaginative. We use what we have around the house. We don't buy anything special."

Whether your child likes to sing, dance or play with an imaginary friend, your toddler will be most excited if you play along and join in the fun adventure.
