Finding the Perfect Nanny

By Kendeyl Johansen

Pages:  1  2  3  4

Whether you decide to use an agency or not, Bowthorpe offers several questions to ask during nanny interviews. "Ask how she was raised. Also, ask about her childcare experience. If she has held a prior nanny position, ask what expectations she had from her last family."

nanny reading Other important considerations include: nanny philosophy on child-rearing, whether she feels comfortable with your job requirements, whether she smokes, and her hobbies and interests. Ask open-ended, hypothetical questions to find out how the nanny would respond to different situations. For example: "My son just had a messy accident after refusing to use the potty. How would you handle this?" Find out if the nanny is familiar with age-appropriate play and child development stages. If at all possible, interview nannies in person and watch how they interact with your family. Finally, ask for references.

It isn't easy to find the perfect nanny for your family. Bowthorpe says, "Give yourself some time to find the right nanny. Don't go into the process too fast, and hire the first candidate. Interview carefully and always check references."

To ensure a good nanny experience, search cautiously, ask multiple questions, and find someone who fits with your family philosophy and style. Then when the search is over, sit back and enjoy your happy children and peace of mind.

I've had lots of au pairs and all have worked out really well for my family. I find them myself on the Internet to avoid paying agency fees. A good nanny au pair finding site is http://www.search-aupair-family.info
