Gym Childcare Tips and Considerations
A Safe Place to Play While Mom Exercises
By Teri Brown
Dunstan says it's also important to check the daycare sick policy. If they do not allow sick children, it's a great sign that they are trying to stay on top of their germ control. Having really good ventilation and sunlight in the daycare room can help with germ control as well, so look for the quality and location of the room in the gym.
Parents should know if their gym daycare is open to addressing the common healthcare issues their child may have, such as asthma and allergies. "It's up to the parent to make sure the gym staff can handle these issues," Dunstan says. "Also be aware if there is food or drink allowed in the facility because kids could share snacks, and a kind gesture between children could quickly become a serious allergic reaction, cause choking or worse."
Dunstan also reminds parents to find out if the gym daycare changes diapers or training pants and if they offer assistance in the potties. Is the bathroom a dedicated one for the children? Does it have little toilets and a mini-step for them to wash their hands? The children's bathroom should be in the daycare room or an area very nearby. They should not have to share the facilities with adults. Not all gyms have these amenities.
Be aware of the activities that are offered for the children, because just as going to the gym is a needed and desired activity for parents, children should enjoy their stay there too.
Beware of gym childcares that only offer videos. Engaging your child in fun and educational activities not only adds to your child's experience, but gives parents peace of mind as well. Children will not want to return if it's not enjoyable.
