For her own son, Frede found the flexibility of a home-care environment with the social advantages of a daycare center. "He went to a very high-quality family childcare home and twice or three times a week, the caregiver took him to a center-based program for more social variety and activities that are hard to provide in a home," she says.

The Next Step: Preschool

Right now you need a daycare, but it won't be long before you are getting your child ready for preschool. The National Institute for Early Education Research offers the top 10 pre-K questions:

  1. Can I make an appointment to visit your program and spend time in a classroom?
  2. Is there a curriculum and how well do the teachers implement it?
  3. What are the qualifications of the teachers?
  4. How much are your teachers paid?
  5. What is the turnover rate for your teachers and assistant teachers?
  6. What are the qualifications of the assistant teachers?
  7. How large are the classes and what are the staff-child ratios?
  8. Are children assessed for learning difficulties and other problems (hearing, vision)? Do teachers know how to work with children who have special problems, and are parents involved in the program?
  9. Does the program provide healthy meals and snacks?
  10. Does routine monitoring for program quality take place?
