How Toddlers Learn Language

By Teri Brown

"This very kind woman gave me the tool I needed to get through the next several months of vocabulary acquisition," Knoll says. "Repetition of the word can drive you crazy, so give them something to chew on mentally, add some vocabulary and see what happens."

Whether you teach them more formally or allow them to figure out things on their own as a part of their daily life, providing a language-rich home can give your baby a head start when it comes to learning language.

What Baby Needs to Learn Language

"Unless there are significant problems, such as health issues or severe neglect, all children learn to talk," says Dr. Vivian Rider. "But many things can influence how early a child talks, how much they will like talking and reading and how their brain develops."

Dr. Rider says the most important things for learning language are

  • nurturing adults that the child can trust.
  • early exposure to language in the form of conversation, books, music, etc.
  • encouragement to experiment and explore.
  • good health (nutrition, immunizations, physical activity, etc.).
  • lots and lots of interaction.
