Turkey Fun for Little Turkeys

Games, Activities and Other Ideas for Toddlers

When the weather has your little turkey stuck inside, Braccio suggests a treasure hunt. "Since the word 'turkey' starts with T, give him a paper bag with a big letter T written on it," she says. "Then, send him around the house to find objects that start with that letter to put in the bag. If an item is too big to fit (such as a table), let him draw a picture of it on a piece of paper and put that in the bag."

Reward your junior explorer with something else beginning with T – a treat! Create an apple turkey by cutting a slit in one end of the apple and filling it with "feathers" made from slices of fruit roll-ups. Add a neck and head to the edible creature by bending a piece of fruit roll-up in the shape of a candy cane and inserting it in a small slit on the apple's other end.

The Big Day

Of course the greatest turkey-themed activity your child will participate in is Thanksgiving Day itself. While traveling or cooking may pull you in various directions, sneak in some memory-making time with your little one. Look for turkeys together in the televised parade, tell family stories in the kitchen while stuffing the bird or simply spend time talking about the best "T" word of all – thankfulness.

The National Thanksgiving Turkey

One of the biggest stars of the season is the National Thanksgiving Turkey. You and your child may catch a glimpse of this fantastic fowl on television in the days prior to Thanksgiving as President George W. Bush continues a holiday tradition that started in 1947 with Harry Truman. In a ceremony at the White House, Bush will "pardon" the bird, sparing him from execution on Thanksgiving Day.

Last year's turkey and its alternate were named May and Flower. (Just for fun, ask your child to think of good names for the 2008 birds.) After the ceremony that spared it from becoming dinner, 2007's patriotic bird was flown to Disney World in Orlando, Fla., to be the grand marshal of Disney's Thanksgiving Day parade.

Last year we took our son to see a turkey at a local farm before Thanksgiving. We all had a great time and it's something we plan to do again this year. However, just a thought for parents, we decided not to tell him that he was eating turkey during dinner. Went with the "big chicken" approach. :0) He'll learn soon enough...
