Turkey Fun for Little Turkeys
Games, Activities and Other Ideas for Toddlers
By Beth Hering
Another fun, inexpensive craft is pinecone turkeys. Think of the pinecone as the turkey's body (putting a small blob of clay on one side of the pinecone to steady it on the table while working can be helpful). Slide in or glue leaves, colored strips of paper or feathers to the larger end of the pinecone to create the turkey's tail. On the smaller end, use a bent pipe cleaner, an acorn or cardboard to make the turkey's head. Add features such as wiggle eyes or a felt wattle as desired. The finished products make adorable place-card holders for guests at Thanksgiving dinner.
Many games your child may already know how to play can be modified slightly to add a seasonal touch. "Duck, Duck, Goose" can become "Duck, Duck, Turkey," with a player who is tagged sent to the "turkey roaster" in the center of the circle. Put a new twist on a traditional game of tag by calling the tagger "the farmer" and letting the runners be "turkeys" that gobble around the yard while trying to escape being caught for Thanksgiving dinner.

Last year we took our son to see a turkey at a local farm before Thanksgiving. We all had a great time and it's something we plan to do again this year. However, just a thought for parents, we decided not to tell him that he was eating turkey during dinner. Went with the "big chicken" approach. :0) He'll learn soon enough...
