Turkey Fun for Little Turkeys

Games, Activities and Other Ideas for Toddlers

Hold on, Santa! November brings Thanksgiving, and that means it is time for turkeys to have their turn in the spotlight. While many toddlers are delighted by animals in any season, now is a great time to focus on our feathered friend. From learning about Thanksgiving traditions to just having fun as a family, here are some turkey-related ideas your child is bound to gobble up.

Meet a Turkey

While images of turkeys may be everywhere this month, why not treat your child to an encounter with a live animal? With cooler weather in many parts of the country, November can be a pleasant month to grab a jacket and head to a nearby zoo or farm.

The Houston Zoo, for example, houses two wild turkeys (Jack and Jim) in the forest exhibit of its McGovern Children's Zoo. While these birds can be seen any time of the day, Brian Hill, director of public affairs for the Houston Zoo, recommends an early arrival (which is great for families since little ones often get cranky as afternoon naptime approaches). "The best time to visit any zoo is in the morning hours," Hill says. "Animals just seem to be more active in the morning."

Hill also advises making the most of a visit by checking the schedule for educational events. "Zoo-wide every day, our keepers do 30 Keeper Talks and interactive presentations," he says. "The Children's Zoo keepers are developing special 'Turkey Keeper Talks' for presentation in the days leading up to Thanksgiving."

Last year we took our son to see a turkey at a local farm before Thanksgiving. We all had a great time and it's something we plan to do again this year. However, just a thought for parents, we decided not to tell him that he was eating turkey during dinner. Went with the "big chicken" approach. :0) He'll learn soon enough...
