Patriotic Painting with Toddlers
Family Fun That's Toddler Friendly
By Kymberly Pratt
Here's what you do:
To make your colored sand, pour 1 cup of sand in a gallon baggie and 2 teaspoons of dry tempera paint in the baggie with 1 teaspoon of water. Close it really well and knead the bag until the sand is all completely mixed. After the sand is mixed, you will want it to sit and dry out for several hours before actually painting or playing with it.
When the sand is dry, cut shapes out of the cardboard or just cut into large pieces for your child to draw on. Show him how to spread some glue with his fingertips or a paintbrush all over his creation. Now the fun part! Let him sprinkle the colored sand over the glue. Allow to dry.
A fun way to create a festive atmosphere at the table!
You'll need:
White pillowcases
Red, white and blue fabric paint
Foam brushes
Star stamp
Aluminum foil
Here's what you do:
Place the aluminum foil in the middle of the pillowcase or fabric so that the paint does not bleed through. Then, decide on the pattern. The American flag is fun, or let your child do stars and stripes, or just random patterns, depending on their age. Whatever they decide, make sure to have him use a different paintbrush for each color to ensure a crisp look. Once the pillowcase is finished, allow it to dry completely, then slip it over your chair. Make one for each of your dining room or kitchen chairs!
Note: If you cannot find pillowcases that will slip over your kitchen or dining room chairs, you can use felt and cut and glue them to size or simply use cheap white fabric. Either solution will be fun and beautiful.
