Fun with Crayons

Crafts and Activities for All Those Colors

Nature Rubbings

You'll need:
Sack
Crayons
White construction paper

Grab a lunch sack or grocery bag and go on a nature walk. During the walk, have your child pick up fun items like sticks, leaves, rocks, coins, paper, etc. Set your child at the table when you get back, and give him some crayons and a piece of white construction paper. Show him how to place the construction paper on top of the items and gently color over the top to create rubbings of the items. The finished piece could be laminated for a placemat. You could also make a game out of it by cutting out the designs and having the child guess what the item is.

Fun Shape Crayons

You'll need:
Pieces of crayon
Microwave-safe bowl
Ice cube trays (can use ones with fun shapes)

Fill a microwave-safe bowl with little pieces of crayon. You can make them out of new crayons or just use leftover pieces. An adult could also shave them using a cheese grater (not recommended for small children!). Melt the crayons in the microwave. This does not take long. (This could also be done in a double boiler on the stove.) Pour the mixture into the ice cube tray. Allow to cool and remove. Now your child has crayons in a fun shape! They are great for party favors.

Today my kids and I did the melted art project, and we had so much fun. It came out great and they are already asking me to do it again. Thanks for the great idea!
