Beyond the Glass
Fun Activities Using Ice By Kymberly Pratt
Old World Ice CreamAn experiment for all ages!
You'll need:
Ice cubes
1/2 cup milk
1/4 teaspoon vanilla
1 tablespoon sugar
5 to 6 tablespoons rock salt
1 pint-size plastic zipper bag
1 gallon-size plastic zipper bag
Here's what you do:
Take the larger plastic zipper bag and fill it halfway with ice. Add the rock salt and seal it up really well.
In the smaller bag, put the milk, sugar and vanilla and seal it up really well also. Now that both bags are sealed up nice and tight, put the smaller bag inside the larger one.
Now, shake, shake, shake! Your child will love this part! The texture of the ice cream should begin to change in about five minutes. When it has the consistency of ice cream, unseal the small bag carefully and wipe away the salt water. Enjoy!
Tip: For a flavor change, add some cut-up fruit or other flavoring.
You'll need:
Ice tray
Small plastic toys
Glass
Fruit punch
Here's what you do:
Clean the small plastic toys well with soapy water and rinse them. Then place one in each slot in the ice tray and fill with water. Place the tray in the freezer. Once completely frozen, take the cubes out, put them in a glass or bowl of fruit punch and watch the toys appear as the ice melts. Do not allow the child to drink with the toys in the liquid, as this may pose a choking hazard.
