The Bad News About Couch Potatoes

and kindergarten children are expected to do homework now; so if it's not already dark by the time they get home, they have to use up what daylight is left getting their schoolwork done. (We got to enjoy childhood when we were children, and we turned out all right. Why is it we're so convinced our children will fail unless they start "rehearsing" for adulthood before they even know how to dress themselves?)

Naturally, school-age children have even more homework – once they've fulfilled their many after-school obligations, like sports teams, dance class, gymnastics and karate. And even if they're not involved in all that stuff, there are plenty of other factors keeping them – and their younger counterparts – from just plain moving these days.

During the school day, for example, where once there were two or three recess periods providing opportunities to expend energy, children nowadays have maybe 15 minutes of free time or none at all – because recess supposedly doesn't offer children as much as those other three Rs. And p
