Gym Childcare Tips and Considerations

A Safe Place to Play While Mom Exercises

"One should also check that little kids are not mixed in with big kids, and there needs to be a full range of age-appropriate toys within the facility," Dunstan says. "This is a dangerous mix. Big kid toys can hurt little kids and big kid games can get more physical and they can topple over one of the smaller children. Also, older children tend to take up more of the time and attention of the gym caregiver, and your small child could easily be ignored."

Also check that there is a reasonable staff-to-child ratio – you do not want one person watching 25 children in a gym.

But He Still Hates It

"Many children will not want to go to a gym daycare if it is not adequate or for another reason, and parents need to be prepared for that," Dunstan says. "The worst thing they can do is force their child to go, because then they will build a negative regard for all daycares."

Dunstan gives the following solutions if your child hates going to the gym's childcare:

  • A great solution to the gym daycare dilemma is to tag team with another parent who attends the gym. Let the children get to know one another and then trade childcare.
  • Parents can choose a gym with very late or very early hours so they can stagger their workouts while the other parent is home to watch the child.
  • Find a trusted neighbor or family member who can watch the child while you get your workout in.
  • Finding decent childcare so you can work out isn't rocket science, even though it may feel that way sometimes! Just remember that if your child isn't happy with the daycare situation, you won't be able to enjoy your workout either.

    Questions to Ask
  • Is the daycare clean?
  • Do they have a sick child policy in place?
  • Is there age group separation and are the toys age appropriate?
  • Are there separate bathrooms for the children?
  • What kinds of activities do they offer?
