Creative Activities for Toddlers Using Chalk

Chalk Dust: "This can be messy but something my kids love to do to this day," Trapp says. "My kids color, color, color over and over again in the same spot. They would color until the chalk stick had almost disappeared. The point? They were making as much 'chalk dust' as possible. They love to dip their finger in a glass of water and then in the chalk dust. They paint with their finger on the concrete. The dust gives another texture and medium to play with. If your child is too small to do this on their own, do it with them. Help them dip their fingers in the different substances. They will love how they feel." Do not let them put their hands in their mouth with chalk on their fingers.

Brick Painting: If you have a brick home, encourage your children to color each brick a different color with the chalk. Paint a red line, a blue line and a green line. Even smaller toddlers can do this because bricks generally go all the way to the ground. You paint one brick and let them use the same color. "My kids also love to chalk/color the tires on my car," Trapp says.
