Elevator Safety
Going Floor to Floor Safely with Small Children
By Teri Brown
Perhaps one of the biggest reasons young children get injured on elevators is that parents don't watch them closely enough. Many feel that because they are in an enclosed area that they can't be hurt, but nothing can be further from the truth. Doors open and close and often young children will stick their head or hand out at the last minute. In fact, the study found that head and hand injuries are the most common for 1- to 2-year olds.
Samantha Wilson, a former police officer, author and internationally recognized expert in child and family safety, as well as the president and founder of Kidproof USA (www.kidproofusa.com), agrees that parental supervision is key to riding on an elevator safely with toddlers and small children. "Elevators can be dangerous if kids are not properly supervised, escorted or taught how to ride them safely," Wilson says. "Some kids get frightened at the enclosed and often crowded space of an elevator and may bolt out unexpectedly, which can get them caught in a closing door. Other times, kids may be distracted and walk onto an elevator as soon as the doors open without ensuring that the elevator is actually on the floor and not just an empty shaft."
Wilson says not only can children be njured if caught in a closing door, but they may even become lost if they bolt out a door at the last minute.
