Magical Moments
Precious Memories from Our Children Come in Big and Small Sizes

Often the moments that move us most are those that demonstrate the fundamental magic of children: their ability to warm our souls merely by showing that they know who we are and trust us to protect them. Chad, a father in Las Vegas, Nev., says the moment his daughter, Simone, clearly recognized him for the first time is the one that will always be most poignant. "One morning I came into her room to get her out of her crib and, as she awoke, she looked up at me, smiled and reached out," he says. "It was as though she was saying, 'Hi, Daddy! Nice to see you!' for the first time. There was no concrete evidence for this, but I knew it in my heart. I'll never forget it as long as I live."
Chad's wife, Anna Michelle, relates a story that demonstrates how mothers and fathers can be touched by the same type of moment for different reasons. "I remember the day Simone smiled for the first time, not because it was the first smile but because of what it represented," she says. "I had been having a tough day, one of those where, admittedly, I wasn't feeling up to the task of being a mom. We were playing on the floor and I was rolling her over to give her a kiss. As I leaned in, she smiled at me, and I just about died. At that moment I knew I would do anything for her."
Perhaps it is a moment when you suddenly realized how resourceful your child could be that remains special to you. "Yes, his birth was an unimaginable moment," sys Joel, a father in Toronto, Canada, says, of his son Bram. "And the first time he said 'I love you, Daddy' destroyed me, of course.
