In a Blink of an Eye
Time Flies When You're Having Fun
By Mark Stackpole
w.graphics.iparenting.com/clipart/familylove/fal021.jpg" width=250 height=183 align=right>BLINK: Corinne leaves for college. I kiss her on the cheek and cry while at the same time trying to let her know how proud and happy I am that she is striking out on her own.
BLINK: I have to give her away to John Doe, who promises to treat her right for the rest of her life. I like him better than Joe Doakes, but still – who will be good enough for my daughter? I cry again, partly because I have been writing some pretty big checks to make sure that Corinne has the wedding of her dreams. But mostly because I have to give her away.
BLINK: She brings her own children to visit and I kiss them while I remember her at that age.
The most important role of a father is to help provide his little girl with the tools she needs to live a successful life on her own. I know that, but I am already a little heartbroken at the thought that I will one day have to give her away: to college, to John Doe and to the world. I want nothing more than for her to be able to stand on her own two feet and feel life's joys while facing down its challenges. But not quite yet.
For just a little while, I want her to have to grab my fingers when she needs to stand up. I want her joys to be limitless and as simple as feeling the wind in her face. I want her challenges to be nothing more than trying to figure out how to roll and wriggle across the floor to reach her favorite toy.
I only got her a few blinks ago..
