A Little Off the Top

Your Toddler's First Haircut

By Mark Stackpole

Having found the right combination of location and stylist, Cutter has no plans to take her children anywhere else.

A winning combination like this is so crucial to both stressed parents and the establishments looking to satisfy its customers. Friedman has found that there is nothing more pleasing than knowing her clients, both old and young, are happy with their experience at Cozy's.

"The first haircut is very special," Friedman says. "It's a rite of passage. The most fulfilling part of my job is being stopped on the street by parents of our little clients and [them tellingme] how we have had such an impact on their family's life."

Preparing for the First Haircut

Cozy Friedman, founder of Cozy's Cuts for Kids, offers the following tips for parents looking to "nip their child's fears about that first snip":

  • Bring your children with you when you go for your haircut. This familiarizes them with the process and makes it less intimidating once it's their turn.
  • Take children to the salon where they are having their haircut prior to the day of their appointment. It's good to let kids see other kids getting haircuts so they know not to be scared.
  • If you are not taking them to a children's-only salon, make sure you request a stylist who has experience working with children.
  • Schedule a time of day that is good for your children not before naptime or at a time of day when they are generally cranky.
  • Remember to relax. If you are nervous or overly emotional, your children will pick up on it right away.
  • Don't forget to save that first lock of hair.
