Hope and Support
for Those Who Stutter By Teri Brown
for Those Who Stutter
Garcia also developed a subconscious habit of engaging in word changes and re-phrasing her sentences to mask the stuttering and maintain fluency. Though Garcia underwent therapy in the sixth grade, she struggled with stuttering for years, and the embarrassment she often felt in public situations influenced her decision to provide support for others. Garcia is now the NSA chapter leader of the first Adult Stuttering Support Group in Santa Barbara, the fifth chapter to be established in the Southern California and Hawaii region.
"The monthly group meetings serve as a means of support and encouragement to those who stutter and their loved ones," says Garcia. "The chapters foster a sense of community and camaraderie among those who struggle with their speech and opens the door to the disfluent world."
The chapters also provide education and resources about stuttering and an inclusive attitude that helps those who suffer from stuttering understand that they are not isolated in their challenges.
"The surrounding community has been incredibly receptive, and I have had a great amount of support from everyone, from local newspaper editors and politicians to local community members and university faculty," says Garcia. "Over a thousand NSA flyers heralding the arrival of the group have been posted on foot within the surrounding areas, and many doors have been opened. It's amazing ... a miracle, really."
A miracle especially for those who stutter and the friends and family members who love them.
