Making the Switch

Introducing Milk to Your Baby

Patience Pays Off
It can be frustrating when your child doesn't want to accept a bottle or you're missing the routine of nursing when you're in the midst of attempting to make the switch. It is important to remember that your calm and patient demeanor, facial expressions, body language and tone of voice all appeal to your child's natural predisposition of reacting to his surroundings.

Depending on your baby's temperament and age and your commitment to changing to milk or formula, it may take some time to completely introduce milk to your child. "As long as you and your baby continue to be comfortable with the process, parents should be happy with the progress," says Dr. Levy.

Signs of Milk Intolerance
  • Excessive gas
  • Spitting up after feedings
  • Skin rash or redness blotches
  • Eczema
  • Hives
  • Diarrhea
  • Occasionally a respiratory reaction or asthma attack, although this is very rare
