Tackling Common Baby and Toddler Stains

Sherry Grunder, a mom of four and grandmother of two in central Maine, has nothing but praise for OxiClean. "It's the best stuff ever," says Grunder. "It gets out almost anything a child can ooze, burp, leak or wallow in."

Finally, wash, rinse and inspect. Is the stain still there? If so, try stain removal again. Whatever you do, don't pop it in the dryer – the heat can actually set the stain.

Busting Baby Stains
Ask any new mom: Formula stains are some of the toughest. Most formulas contain both iron and unsaturated oils, two substances that are very difficult to get out. Your best bet is to tackle the stains right away, pre-treating before washing. If that isn't possible, hit them with a stain removal spray or rub on a liquid detergent before tossing into the laundry basket.

Baby food isn't so bad – as long as your baby sticks to pears, apples and perhaps a bit of banana! More colorful dishes will require a bit more attention. Begin by scraping off as much excess food as possible with a spoon. Then rub a liquid detergent or stain remover into the stain. Let the garment set for at least five minutes, and then rinse, rubbing the cloth together in your hands. Rinse and repeat until no more stain can be removed, and then launder.

Mildew. If you thought it could only happen to shower curtains, think again. Mildew is anxious to leave little nasty black dots all over your child's clothes as well. Mildew results from a lot of damp, dirty laundry sitting around – a common scenario when there's a baby ortwo in the house.
