Teaching Toddlers Good Manners By Lisa A. Goldstein
- Be removed from a situation if they are touching something they shouldn't.
- Be told "no" whenever they are doing or touching something they shouldn't.
- Have others take and shake their hands, even though the child has no idea what is going on.
- Continuously hear terms such as "share" and "play nice."
- Have "please" and "thank you" reinforced.
- Be taught through consistency.
By the age of 2 years, your child should:
- Shake hands when prompted.
- Make eye contact when speaking with others, especially adults.
- Use "please" and "thank you" (prompted, if necessary).
- Tidy up toys (with assistance).
- Share and take turns with other playmates.
- Begin learning to use utensils properly.
By the age of 3, your child should:
- Automatically shake hands to say "hello" and "goodbye."
- Clean up their room with little or no help.
- Use utensils when eating.
- Wash hands before and after a meal.
- Sit for an entire meal.
- Begin doing small chores such as bringing wastebaskets to you.
- Learn to not interrupt, unless in case of emergency.
