Teaching Toddlers Good Manners

  • Be removed from a situation if they are touching something they shouldn't.
  • Be told "no" whenever they are doing or touching something they shouldn't.
  • Have others take and shake their hands, even though the child has no idea what is going on.
  • Continuously hear terms such as "share" and "play nice."
  • Have "please" and "thank you" reinforced.
  • Be taught through consistency.

By the age of 2 years, your child should:

  • Shake hands when prompted.
  • Make eye contact when speaking with others, especially adults.
  • Use "please" and "thank you" (prompted, if necessary).
  • Tidy up toys (with assistance).
  • Share and take turns with other playmates.
  • Begin learning to use utensils properly.

By the age of 3, your child should:

  • Automatically shake hands to say "hello" and "goodbye."
  • Clean up their room with little or no help.
  • Use utensils when eating.
  • Wash hands before and after a meal.
  • Sit for an entire meal.
  • Begin doing small chores such as bringing wastebaskets to you.
  • Learn to not interrupt, unless in case of emergency.
