Making Merry with Mickey
Walt Disney World at the Holidays
By Lyn Mettler
There's just something romantic about letting your inner child out to play, at least for me and my husband. And what better place to set them free than the 47 square miles of playground that is Walt Disney World in Orlando, Fla.?
Disney holds a special place in our hearts. My husband grew up visiting Disney World every year on vacation, and for him it's a place to relive fond memories. For me, it's about the joy of being a kid again.
In the three years that we've been married, we've been to Disney three times, though we had never before visited during the holidays. And though I would expect nothing less, the holidays at Disney are truly magic.
From the snow on Main Street to the magnificent decorations and beautiful shows, Disney will put you in the holiday spirit and help you and your partner create a little "magic" yourselves.
The Magic Kingdom, Disney's first theme park in Florida, is truly for the kid at heart. Pretend you're a child again flying over London on
Peter Pan's Flight and zipping through the cosmos on Space Mountain.
But it's at night when the magical holiday celebrations truly begin. Each year, Disney hosts Mickey's Very Merry Christmas Party at the Magic Kingdom on select days in December, after the park closes, from 7 p.m. until midnight. You must purchase separate tickets for the event, which (in 2006) are $39.95 in advance or $45.95 the day of for adults, $31.95 or $37.95 for kids 3 through 9. But it's truly worth it.
As soon as you walk in, it's snowing on Main Street (OK, so it's not real snow, but a darn good replication). The shops and restaurants are all decorated in the spirit of the holidays, and there's a Christmas tree in Town Square.
