Mommy's Day Out

By Belinda Clarke

As luck would have it, the night before my big "Mommy's Day Out" was a sleepless one. My infant son, now 11 weeks, still only slept in two-hour stints and this particular night, he was particularly agitated. So, as I prepared myself the next morning for a day at Nordstrom for some special attention, I felt tired, cranky, and for some reason, guilty for leaving for the day. My husband reminded me how much I had been looking forward to this day and, more importantly, how much I needed to take some time out to do something for me.

So I headed toward the mall for a day of beauty and a little shopping. Seeking a "one-stop-shop" for all of my pampering needs, I selected Nordstrom for their excellent customer service and also because they had a spa, a caf窠personal shoppers and a dynamite cosmetics department.

My first stop was the Nordstrom Spa where I was welcomed warmly into the quiet, therapeutic atmosphere. There, I received probably the best facial of my life. As I lay down on the table and the facialist blanketed me with warm towels, my first thought was, "Ah, now I can get some sleep." And I did relax, for a full hour, as she massaged moisture back into my skin. Later, as she took a long, close look at my face and gave me her somewhat grim report, I realized that my facial care regimen had been reduced to soap, water, and face cream -- sometimes. I had dry skin, broken capillaries, and dark circles – the mask of motherhood! As she concluded my royal treatment, complete with foot rub and head massage, she offered a great piece of advice. She said, "Every day, regardless of how busy and consumed you are with your baby, try and take five minutes and pay attention to your skin. Not only will it immediately improve the appearance of your skin, it will pay off down the road."
