Fun with Shells

Crafts to Make from Summer's Bounty

Glue each strip down in its appropriate place. Use your shells or pebbles as the game pieces for "Tic-Tac-Shell." If you do not have enough shells that "match" to use for your Xs and Os, you can paint five of them one color and five of them another color.

Trinket Pots
Does your child need somewhere to keep those little ponytail holders? Does she need somewhere to organize her pens and pencils? Does he need a gift to give a teacher? Here is a simple solution your child will love.

You'll need:

  • Terra-cotta pot or small box
  • Sand
  • Shells or pebbles
  • Glue (white and hot glue)
  • Spatula
  • Paintbrush
  • Varnish

What you will need to do:
After you have decided what container to use, apply a layer of glue onto the top of the box or rim of the terra-cotta pot. Roll the pot or box in the sand and allow it to dry completely.

After your sand is dry, use hot glue to attach the shells or pebbles in place. You can use as many or as little as you would like. (Remember to be careful when using a hot glue gun!) After all is dry, you can add a layer of varnish to help seal your container and allow the colors to brighten. Next, fill your container with trinkets, plants or whatever you need to organize.

Speaking of Shells...

Did you know that a turtle's bones are fused to his back, which means that turtles cannot crawl out of their shells as some may think? And while many children may want to add this shell to their collection in the form of a pet, turtles are not recommended for young children they can carry salmonella.
