Is It Lunchtime Yet?
Daycare Dilemmas of Stay-at-Home Moms
By Sharon Waldrop
I remember vividly the day I left my career outside the home for good. That was the same day I held my children tight and promised them I would never leave their side again until either (a) they started school or (b) I was in a coma or medically detained by other means.
Two months into my new career as a stay-at-home mother (SAHM), I wore my new name tag and hat proudly. However, the ink on my job description was barely dry before I began to realize how much I missed such luxuries as privacy in the restroom and quiet, hot meals at places where highchairs did not outnumber barstools two to one.
Every mother is a working mother, whether she spends time away from home to earn a paycheck or not. I have been on both sides of the fence and know for a fact that every mother's role is a demanding, never-ending one. Shortly after scaling that fence with leaps and bounds, I admitted to myself, "I could really use a coffee break right about now."
Many SAHMs find their roles rewarding and fulfilling, yet have a need for that overdue coffee break. Perhaps a bi-weekly manicure, a trip to the grocery store without children in tow or quiet time at home for a little rest and relaxation will do. Many mothers even find solace in a productive day alone at home in the company of cleaning chemicals and vacuum attachments.
