Oh Boy, Oh Boy, Oh Boy!
Confronting Motherhood, Womanhood and Selfhood in a Household of Boys
By Karin Kasdin
My children enjoy their DPT shots more than they enjoy trying on clothes. They're too hot. They're so sweaty they'll stink up the new clothes and then we'll have to buy them even if we hate them. It's too hard to get their sneakers off. The lock on the dressing room door is malfunctioning. The door is too short. They're sooooo hot! Doesn't it make perfect sense just to buy one size larger than we bought the last time and call it a day? They can tell if something fits just by holding it against their bodies. They're missing their favorite television program and they're sooooooo hot!
I could always hear the little girls in the fitting rooms on the opposite side of the children's department. They would ooh and ahh at themselves in the mirror. They would step out into the open where the saleswoman would ooh and ahh over them. Their mothers would swell with pride at the way their angels looked in their party dresses or Easter bonnets or miniature sweater sets with freshwater pearl buttons. Next mom and child would head for the shoe department to search for the perfect patent leathers to complete the ensemble. I once suggested that we extend our shopping trip to include a stopover in the shoe department. About five years ago,I think. I know one of these days they'll get back to me on that.
